Vegan smores are a no brainer for seasoned vegans but for those who are new to veganism or maybe even a dairy free eating person trying to find their way these babies are a must try. My husband likes these better than the traditional ones so they stand up to the comparison test and would work great as a side to any weekend BBQ party and of course at the campsite fire pit.
There are tons of vegan chocolate choices out there so don’t fret it you can’t find the bar I have pictured. You could even use Ghirardelli chocolate chips instead. If you use the bar I used or one similar to it in thickness a tip; set the chocolate on the graham cracker then smash the cooked marshmallow between the two crackers just like you normally would but then set the finished smore on the grill for 30-45 seconds and it will melt perfectly. Otherwise it is only half melted but still amazing!
Another tip, do NOT put the marshmallows on a metal skewer because it will heat up faster than the marshmallow will and cause it to start to slip off, a bamboo skewer works better. I found that 3 of the vegan marshmallows fills the cracker like 1 typical one would.
Lastly, the regular graham crackers in the store are vegan as most vegans know BUT they have high fructose corn syrup in them so if you want to avoid an overdose of mercury or a cause of over eating avoid that kind. 🙂
Vegan Smores
Makes: as many as you want
Graham crackers, broken in half
Vegan chocolate
Vegan marshmallows
Thread 3 marshmallows onto a wooden skewer and turn frequently over a low flame.
While marshmallows are browning break the chocolate up and place on the graham cracker.
When the marshmallows are done to your preference place on top of the the chocolate covered graham half and press down with the other half of the graham cracker firmly, twisting the skewer as you pull it out.
If desired place the finished smore on the grill for another 30 seconds to further melt the chocolate and ENJOY!
Another recipe showing that vegan’s can so eat just like anyone else with a bit of thought process. Great treat recipe.
I really love the idea of making smores when I go camping. However, we don’t get Graham crackers in the UK. What are they like or do you know of an alternative to them you can get in the UK?x
Zoe,
That sucks that they don’t have graham crackers in the UK! A few subs that might work would be vanilla wafers (small but would work), thin biscuit crackers/cookies or a homemade sugar cookie would work too. I did a search and found that you guys have something called Nilla Wafers as well as Maria’s biscuits. Some people have suggested ginger snaps but it is a very different flavor. I think graham crackers are very subtly sweet and in a smore you taste the chocolate and marshmallow more so you can judge from that too. They are also very light and crispy. Good luck finding something that will work. I have issues finding many things now living in a small town too so I feel your pain!!
