Feria in San Isidro, Costa Rica

This is the first post in my new Vegan Grocery Haul series.  I moved to Costa Rica from the US on November 4, 2016.  My vegan grocery haul in Costa Rica is a bit different than it was in the states and I want to share it with you all.

Protecting Our Precious Cargo

We are digital nomads and are moving around the country of Costa Rica to get a feel for each area and its microclimate.  In this series I plan to share our vegan grocery haul from the different cities within Costa Rica.  Each city offers slightly different produce based on the microclimate it is near.  The imported goods also differ based on how many ex-pats shop in the stores.

The Feria in San Isidro is held on Thursday and Friday each week.  I go every Thursday because the produce is higher quality than the left overs available on Fridays.  If you are on a tight budget, shopping Friday is usually deeply discounted.  Credit cards are not accepted at the Feria so if you go, make sure to bring Colones.

Produce at the Feria is relatively inexpensive and is very fresh because it comes straight from the farmer.  Imported foods like nuts, seeds, nutritional yeast, and other ingredients that many vegans use are very expensive because of the import taxes.   The vast majority of our vegan grocery haul is fresh produce.  The extra cost of the few imported goods we purchase is made up by the inexpensive cost of the produce.

Vegan Grocery Haul: Part One, Farmer’s Market

In part one, I explore the farmers market in the city of San Isidro (Pérez Zeledón), Costa Rica.  In Costa Rica the farmers market is called La Feria del Agricultor, but most people say Feria for short.  I’m told the Feria in San Isidro is the second largest Feria in the country, with over 200 vendors selling their goods.

When we visited Costa Rica in 2015 to decided if we wanted to move here, one priority was to scope out the food situation.  Being vegan, I had to be sure that I could survive living in another country with different ingredients than I am used to.  We were all open to trying new things, but I needed to be sure that my vegan grocery haul would be fruitful ;-).  I needed the basic staples to work from (you know, rice, beans, tofu, and tons of fruits & veggies).
